Album: AlligatorsThese large reptiles are among the few survivors from the age of dinosaurs and have changed little over the last 65 million years. They are formidable semiaquatic predators with powerful jaws, and eyes and nostrils on the top of their head so that they can see and breathe while partially submerged. They are black with a broad head and rounded snout which is much shorter than the crocodile's. They feed in and near freshwater ponds and streams taking animals of all kinds, including birds snatched from low branches. Once widely hunted for its skin, alligators became seriously endangered by the 1950s but strong conservation efforts have successfully brought back the North American population. Changed: 04/01/2007

Album: BadgerThe badger's flattened shape, short, powerful front legs tipped with 1 1/2" claws, and tremendous strength combine to make it the premier excavator in North America. It uses this digging ability to
obtain food by digging for small rodents.Badgers may sleep through cold periods, but they do not hibernate and must find food throughout the winter.
When threatened, badgers dig a hole, back into it to protect thier rear and face its attacker with bared teeth. Few animals are willing to take on this formidable defense. Changed: 12/27/2005
