Highlight for Album: Tiger
Album: Tiger

Undoubtedly the most charismatic animal of India. The Indian Tiger is one of 5 sub-species distributed throughout Asia. Extremely endangered in the wild it is estimated that there are only 3500-4000 tigers left in India and that makes up about 65% of the world's population. Tigers prefer to hunt large deer -particularly Sambar where available. However, they are quite adaptable and can survive on smaller prey or even fish if necessary. They may attack humans if prey is unavailable or the tiger is old or injured. It is this behavior that has earned it the feared tite of "maneater" although in actuality both elephants and leopards take many more human lives. Project Tiger , started in 1973, is India's best known conservation effort. This plan has been responsable for protecting and in fact growing the wild Tiger population of India-today's tiger population is 3 times what it was at the inception of Project Tiger. Currently there are 27 preserves with over 40000 sq, miles of tiger habitat being protected.

Highlight for Album: Chital
Album: Chital

The Chital or Spotted Deer is the most common and most visible deer of India. They live in large herds of mixed males, females, and young. They graze both grassland and open woodland, often beneath troops of langurs who knock the fruits to the ground for the chital's easy picking. The sexes are almost identicle except for the male's larger size and antlers. With beautiful and varied coloring, great looking racks of antlers and its spotting, I believe that the Chital is the handsomest deer I have photographed anywhere in the world. The pictures in this album come from Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Panna, and Pench-all national parks in central India.

The langurs shown here are all the Common or Hanuman Langur. They are silver grey with a black face. They are venerated by Hindus as a god. The Hunuman Langur is known for its unique relationship with the Chital, each warning the other of the approach of preditors and the Chital feeding on the fruit and leaves dropped by langurs
